Nortegas donates 9 tons of food to the foodbanks of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias

  • As part of the company’s Christmas volunteer programme, employees had the chance to donate the cost of the Christmas hamper to their province’s foodbank.
  • The 9,000 kg of food collected will be distributed among the foodbanks of the Basque Country, Cantabria and Asturias, regions where the distributor operates.

Nortegas, the second natural gas distributor nationwide and in keeping with its commitment to the communities where it operates, will donate 9 tons of food to the foodbanks of Bizkaia, Gipuzkoa, Araba, Cantabria and Asturias.

This initiative is part of Por una Navidad más solidaria (For a More Caring Christmas), the gas distributor’s Christmas employee volunteer programme. Nortegas thus offers its employees the chance to donate the amount of the company’s Christmas hamper for its workforce to the food bank of their province, thus helping at-risk families at such a special time of the year.

Thanks to the 9,000 kg of food donated by Nortegas, the foodbanks can provide a basic food hamper with food for a month to over 650 families with four members on average.

The number of people and families in difficulties has steadily increased since the start of the pandemic. Nortegas thus wants to show its support for the foodbanks’ work and to help to meet the basic needs of at-risk people.

Nortegas has already supported the foodbanks of the provinces where it operates. Last April, at the height of the coronavirus crisis, the distributor made a donation to those regions’ foodbanks that was distributed among vulnerable families.

“Foodbanks do very important work and they have played a particularly important role in the context of Covid-19,” explained Javier Contreras, Nortegas’s CEO. “We are strongly committed to the communities in which we operate. As part of those region’s socio-economic fabric, we believe we need to support organisations such as the foodbanks that are helping families in difficult circumstances”.
